I've just started Tully. I'm about 3 chapters in.
I'm miserable. Tell me it gets happier. I feel so sad already.
Maybe now wasn't the best time for me to read this one.
It's going to be worth it, right?

Nope. I finished this book in a black, dark fog of depression.

ReplyDeleteSee I really loved Tully and I've read it many times over. It was so descriptive it broke my heart to think that anybody could live such a life of despair and continuing hardship. I often found myself lost in her world. Truth be told, it is such a Universal story to so many young woman, fact rather than fiction (whether we like to believe that or not) It portrays that you don't have to be ruined by your life, no matter how tragic and horrific it may have been. She was a strong girl turning into woman, always pushing forward, looking ahead, with the voice that things have to change, you can't keep on living the way that you do.
ReplyDeleteIt can be one of those either love it or detest it, but hey I grew up as a kid with the likes of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Tess Gerritisen horror, the kind of honesty of language in this book has been nothing new to me over my reading years.
I love Paullina Simons and read the Bronze Horseman in one sitting from cover to cover to become obsessed by the heartbreaking journey of the characters. I also Eleven Hours shocking (I was pregnant at the time of reading it, and to be kidnapped so callously, horrific) and Red Leaves, such a shame of a young life taken so tragically.
She certainly has me lured in and I appreciated her literature from all takes of life.
That's me, I read it all! Although I'm reading much lighter at the moment with paulo coelho lol
Come back to it another time is my vote. It is very raw and taxing and although I liked it I don't think that I could handle it right now (I read it many years ago..i think before I had the kids) . Go the Bronze Horseman if you haven't read that, it is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't get better. It's such a great book! I love it, it's my fave book ever - so psychologically wrenching and depressing. This is how I know it's a good book, because I feel absolutely frustrated and wretched for Tully. Paulina is my fave author - in all her books she stirs up emotion in me. I'm a bit emotionally void and I don't feel much apart the strongest of emotions. And if a writer can produce feelings stir within me - they are very talented writers. Much like yourself Mel! :)
