The past year or so, as I've become more and more obsessed conscious of the colours around me, I have completely fallen in love with hydrangeas.
And while blogging today, I learned a fact about them that I didn't know. Of course, I have the blackest of black thumbs, so perhaps the rest of the world knew. But not I.
Zoey, over at Ramblings of a Wife and Mama had a picture of a beautiful pink one, and mentioned that the colour of hydrangeas is determined by the pH balance in the soil.
Apparently, acidic soil will produce the blue flowers, and the less acidic the pinks.
Lime will produce the pink blooms.
And the lovely blues can be attained by adding aluminium sulphate.
And yes, this is me posting useless (but pretty!) crap until my mojo returns. Why do you ask? ;-)

I love hydrangeas in all their colours and guises. I think they're particularly beautiful as they fade. Such grande dames of the floral world.
ReplyDeleteI love Hydrangeas too.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was little thinking they were such a Nanna flower.
Now they are going to be all my bridesmaids bouquets :)
Im partial to hydrangeas too! Love all the different colours, particularly the pink ones.
ReplyDeleteMy Great-Aunt had them all through her garden and I have fnd memories of walking around framed by colour. She added all sorts of mysterious things to the soil to attain a rainbow in her backyard.
ReplyDeleteI love roses. Am going to have a rose garden here one day.
I ADORE hydrangeas and meant to put one on my Christmas list this year. They are heavenly.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite flowers are peonies. Divine divine divine!
My nan used to grow the most divine hydrangeas. It was an ongoing joke in our family how harshly she would prune them back at the end of the season, but sure enough next year they would be back bigger and better!
ReplyDeleteWhen she passed away my mum took a cutting of the plant and it is now takes pride of place in their garden. It has also been dug up and transported to two different gardens when they moved and is still thriving!
My daughters didn't get to meet my nan but i love seeing them play around the hydrangeas :)
Oh that's interesting to learn (I have a black thumb too). The house where I grew up had a giant hydrangea bush outside the front door, beautiful blue flowers. And, yes, the soil is acidic on that lot.
ReplyDeleteMy flowers were roses, and I still love the smell of them (and all the cheesy romance attached), but calla lilies are my new favourites. Solitary, tall and graceful, they remind me of my little girl.
I love hydrangeas, too, but I have yet to get the hydrangea bush in my back yard to bloom!
ReplyDeleteI'm another who loves Hydrangeas. I also love saying their name out aloud. I remember my Ma growing them and teaching me how to pronounce their name properly!
ReplyDeleteShe had a lovely big bush outside her back door. So they always make me think of her.
*gulp* I even have a fake hydrangea on the telly!
xox
Oh my golly gosh. I only just started reading your blog, and the other day, before reading this post, I only JUST realised how much I LOVE hydrangeas! So serendipity and all! Absolutely beautiful, want them all over my garden!
ReplyDeleteWoah these take me back to my childhood, I used to pick the bunch & pretend to be a bride! I ♥ Hydrangeas & thanks for teaching me something I never knew!
ReplyDeleteWow I never, ever knew that (black thumb here too lol). I spied some blue flowers at a distance outside my hospital window five weeks ago when I had bub. I didn't know what they were but the blue inspired me to ask Mum and she said they were Hydrangeas, now I know why they were blue. I just had to go have a closer look the day I left hospital.
